Continental Pottery As Home Decoration

Most Continental pottery was made from an earthenware base, covered with a glaze to which tin oxide had been added, and is known as tin glaze.Tin-glaze pottery is given different names according to its country of origin. In Italy and Spain it is called maiolica, in France and Germany it is known asfaience, and in the Netherlands as Delft.
The richly coloured designs and motifs of Continental pottery of the 17th and 18th centuries provided a popular source of inspiration for makers in the 19th century and later.
Most of these later copies are highly decorative and collectable in their own right.

Italian-made majolica was sent to other European countries, and inspired their potters in turn to produce ware of a comparable high standard. The painting of majolica is its greatest beauty and the artists who did it were masters of both line and colour. The colours that predominate are blue, yellow, orange, black and green. If a wider range of colours is used it may indicate the piece is of higher quality. Not only were the nearly flat surfaces of dishes used for coloured pictures that remind us of the glory of the Italy of the early sixteenth century, but the round pot, known as an albarello, was equally lavishly and diversely painted.

Italian majolica was exported to all the countries of Europe, and greatly affected the wares they made. In some instances, Italian potters were induced to settle abroad and teach local men how to improve their work. This occurred at Antwerp, in particular, and with the invasion of Flanders by the Spaniards in the late sixteenth century the potters fled northwards to Holland.

Many honest copies were made in the 19th century, marked by makers such as Doccia, Molaroni, Maiolica Artistica Pesarese and Bruno Buratti - these are collectable but considerably less valuable.
