Everyone needs a different number of hours every night to obtain optimal rest. You may be able to survive on just five hours of sleep but someone else who is of a similar age may need eight hours instead. Regardless of the amount of sleep you need in order to perform well, the mattress is the key to ensuring you feel rested.

So what contributes to an optimal mattress for you? Let’s find out.

Height: This is an important factor because a good height helps you to lift yourself out of bed easily. In fact when you sit on your bed, your feet should be flat on the ground and your knees in a straight line with your hips. A suitable height from the floor for a platform bed will be about 18 inches for most people. Adjust the height accordingly if you’re taller or shorter than the average height.

Firmness: The mattress has to be able to support your body well, with your buttocks, head, shoulders and heels in the right alignment. It shouldn’t be too firm that it will push on the main pressure points on your body, which will result in aches. Nor should it be too soft till it fails to support your body. 

Type: There are many types of mattress that you can choose from, but at the end of the day it all depends on your personal preferences. Here are a few common ones:

a)   Inner spring: spring-based mattresses are suitable for almost anyone but a firm one is great for people who are overweight or have backaches.

b)   Memory foam: such mattresses adhere to your body’s contours so they relieve your pressure points. It also absorbs movement so you won’t be disturbed, even when your partner tosses and turns during their sleep. But their heat-sensitive qualities could make you feel hot during the night and they have been known to emit an unpleasant chemical smell.

c)   Latex: this material is made from either natural or synthetic rubber, so it makes for a uniformly firm mattress. According to experts, latex is the right fusion of comfort and firmness for people with backaches. So after taking these factors into consideration, when is it a good time to change your mattress? Experts advise that if you wake up in the morning feeling achey, then it’s time to change your mattress to a more suitable one for a better night’s sleep!
