How to design a productive home office

If you’re a freelancer or have flexible work arrangements with your company, you need a home office that comfortably puts you in a productive mood and away from distractions. Setting up a home office doesn’t really require a substantial overhaul but there are still a few things to take note:

Pick the right place

You may think that it doesn’t matter where you work as long as you have your laptop with you, but the location really does make a big difference. If you work in an area (e.g. kitchen) that is focused more on leisure than work, you’ll end up getting distracted.

Even if you don’t have a spare room to work in, close off a certain section of your home and dedicate it solely to the purpose of work. It can be a corner of your living room or even the storeroom, as long as you feels comfortable working there.

How to design a productive home office

Set up a system of organization

Install sufficient space for your documents, files and stationery with shelves, drawers and bookcases. For a smoother work flow, arrange your work space in such a way so that all the equipment you need are close at hand while others are stored away neatly for future use. Plastic containers or collapsible boxes are inexpensive storage solutions that will also keep the chaos at bay. When you have an established system of organization, it makes it easier for you to keep track of your projects.

Make yourself comfortable

A home office doesn’t mean you have to endure discomfort or an austere décor. Furnish your home office with ergonomic furniture and ensure that there is sufficient light where you will be working. For a more personalized style, decorate your office with things like your favorite photos, cushions and even soft toys.  You could also consider painting the space in a vibrant colour like red or yellow to put you in the mood for productivity. The ultimate goal is to create an inspirational place where you are motivated to produce results.
