Decorating On a Budget with your home

Like a tidal wave, the recession swept away most of what people had into the drains. Some investments, others savings, causing most to think twice before spending. Decorating your house is now, more than ever, widely considered as a luxury rather than a need. Not that a beautiful house with exceptionally classy interior design is more important than daily necessities, but most people do not realize the impact of beautifying one’s home has on their emotional welfare. Imagine coming home to a cluttered space, as opposed to a warm and cozy room with a sense of homeliness. The difference is vast. Having stressed the importance of a comfortable home, decorating your house also demands precision. Once done wrong, it will cost more to undo the damage. Now that hiring an interior designer is no longer powered by an impulse and a telephone call, we have some tips that may help you rediscover homely comfort under a tight budget and perhaps your hidden talent of interior decoration.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail

Life teaches us lessons aplenty. One of with is the need to plan before you act. First, start off with knowing exactly how much you can spend on this bold project. No point having a nicely decorated home when you have to starve for the rest of the month. If you have the foresight, you might be able to save for 6 months before embarking stripping down your place and then dress it up. Then, move on to your needs (okay, or wants…). Have a very clear idea as to what exactly it is that you need to replace, refurnish or refurbish. Last but not least, go on crazy window (furniture) shopping trips. Check out every single furniture store in the vicinity of the place you stay in, or even flea markets and garage sales and you might actually stumble of treasures. (Treasures meaning steals…) However, there is no need for you to fly over to Italy to look at prized furniture. After all, you are operating under a *tight* budget.

Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten

A mistake too many people make is that whenever they are operating under a tight budget, they will automatically go for or look for the cheapest product available. Cheap products are often not as durable as those expensive deals though this does not apply to all furniture that you might be buying. Pay attention to the quality and the reliability of the dealer of the maker of the product. Though we have just advised you on the cost factor of the equation, sometimes, it is more advisable to spend a few more bucks to get a piece of furniture that can actually last years.

DIY: Reuse, recycle and reduce

Sometimes, the novelty of buying new things overwhelms us and we just want to buy things because we like them new. Do not buy things on a whim, especially when you are on a tight budget. Do inventories check first and see what exactly it is that you need and what else can you reuse or recycle. A piece of old wooden shelve can be repainted into another colour that fits your new colour theme in your home. The internet also offers wonderful do it yourself (DIY) ideas that are so simple that you might be able to build something for yourself, spending money only on the cost of making it! Old pieces of T-shirts can be cut and sewn into floor cloths or table cloths if you are all for vintage. A bit of dyeing here and there, painting walls instead of engaging someone to do it, using old newspapers instead of special glass cleaning agents, all this DIY-ing, reusing and recycling will help in reducing the amount you spend at the end of the day!

When you realize you have enough, you are truly rich

In desperate times, take desperate measures. No, we do not mean that you should end your life because you are not able to match up with the most-beautiful-contest you are having with your friends or relatives. While we realize that most of this competition is all in your head, it does help when you go minimalist. This way, you save costs, your house looks less cluttered, it is a lot less maintenance work and if that competition is actually going on, you can proudly boast about this new and “in” style of interior decoration!
